Love apples? Read on!



“An apple a day keeps the doctor away”…but why?


The saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” isn’t just an old wives tale. Eating an apple everyday has many health benefits that may in fact help keep you away from the Dr’s office. I’m a big fan of apples and here’s why.  Not only do apples contain a healthy dose of Vitamin C, fiber, and potassium but also have various antioxidant polyphenols found in them. Certain polyphenols and flavonoids found in apples have been shown to help regulate blood sugar levels, and have beneficial anti-inflammatory effects on our cardiovascular system. Most of the antioxidant polyphenols and flavonoids are found in both the flesh and the skin, so it is worth eating apples with their skin on! The fiber in apples has also been linked to better satiety. Those who eat an apple before a meal may decrease their total caloric intake at the meal because of the feeling of fullness the apple promotes. In addition, the soluble fiber in apples appears to help lower blood lipid levels. Some studies have even shown anti-cancer and anti-asthma benefits of apples. Other studies show that the juice of an apple has properties that can kill up to 80% of bacteria in the mouth, which helps prevents tooth decay.  So there you have it, an apple a day keeps the dentist away too! Now that is a lot of health protecting power built into such a “plain Jane” fruit!
